

Driftlab is excited to announce the second phase of its unique residency program, in collaboration with the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute. Following the success of the 2024 program with artists Hillel Roman, Nivi Alroy, Dana Darwish, and Liat Segal, Driftlab continues to foster groundbreaking collaborations between artists and marine scientists, exploring innovative ways to deepen the connection between art, science, and the marine environment.
01/ About the Program
Driftlab Residency invites mid-career artists to engage in a research-based process, focusing on the marine environment and its multifaceted significance. Participants will collaborate with scientists to create new artworks that respond to critical environmental challenges and offer fresh perspectives on the relationship between humans and the sea.
The program emphasizes co-creation as a central methodology, ensuring a two-way exchange of knowledge and inspiration between art and science. The residency encourages projects that go beyond traditional dissemination of scientific information, prioritizing artistic processes that challenge, expand, and reshape perspectives for both disciplines.
02/ Eligibility
The residency is open to:

Mid-career artists with a proven track record of museum or institutional exhibitions.

Research-based artists who integrate scientific or academic inquiry into their creative process.

Artists with a particular interest in water and marine environments.
Applications are welcome from all disciplines, including but not limited to:

Visual arts (painting, sculpture, digital art, photography, video art).

Performing arts (dance, theater, music).

Literary arts (poetry, storytelling, experimental writing.
03/ What the Program Offers

Access to the Institute: Guided tours, in-depth exposure to research projects, and access to archival materials, including visual, textual, and scientific resources.

Scientific Collaboration: Mentorship and consultation with marine scientists to develop projects grounded in scientific insights.

No Studio Requirement: The program does not include a dedicated studio space. Participants will engage with the Institute as needed to support their research and creative work.
04/ Funding
While the program does not offer a financial grant, it provides participants with exclusive access to scientific expertise, resources, and exposure through the Institute.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit the following materials in one PDF file:

A portfolio of up to 10 works.

Articles, essays, or reviews written by curators or critics about the applicant’s previous work.

A project proposal (maximum 1,000 words) detailing the artistic concept, research objectives, and potential collaboration with the Institute’s scientists.
